Client

A leading Australian telecommunications and information services company, providing a full range of communications services and competing in all telecommunications markets. This company serves 17.7 million retail mobile users, 4.9 million retail fixed voice customers, and 3.6 million retail fixed broadband customers.

Challenge

The company faces significant challenges that require an overhaul of its networks, including the need to drastically reduce both capital and operating expenses, decrease the time it takes to introduce new products, and increase organisational flexibility and agility.

Solution

The adopted solution involves Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV), which utilises the virtualisation of network functions deployed on general purpose standardised hardware such as high-volume servers. This approach, supported by open stack software like Red Hat, aims to cut capital and operational expenditures and shorten product development times.

NFV transforms traditional network management and operations, enabling an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) model that supports various internal services such as DNS Management, B2B Cloud, and TaaS Cloud (Token as a Cloud). This model utilises a Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) strategy, fostering a more flexible and efficient development environment.

Implementation

A consultancy has deployed teams in Cloud Program Management Services providing Project Management, Business Analysis, PMO, and Engineering Technical Services to deliver the cloud capability. Activities have focused on redesigning legacy systems for operation within the NFV environment, allowing for integration with new systems capable of self-healing and automatic healing functionalities.

Business Value

The virtualisation of network functions on general-purpose standardised hardware offers significant business value:

  • Flexibility: Enables work from anywhere at any time.

  • Business Agility: Employs a CI/CD approach, simplifying and accelerating implementation compared to on-premise computing.

  • Innovation Facilitation: Allows for development based on customer needs, promoting innovation.

  • Efficiency: Reduces operating costs and eases scalability, lowering capital expenditures.

  • Collaboration Enhancement: Supports real-time file editing and access from any location.

  • Improved Backup Solutions: Offers multiple backup options while ensuring high availability and network performance.

  • Data Security: Enhances protection with robust policies, technologies, applications, and controls.

Outcome

The implementation has successfully transformed the company’s network operations by leveraging advanced virtualisation technologies, resulting in reduced costs, enhanced flexibility, and increased capacity to innovate. This strategic shift has not only streamlined operations but also positioned the company to better meet the evolving demands of its customers and the broader telecommunications market.
